SAINT PETERSBURG. Completing 10 years (2008-2018) of cultural presence, the Contemporary Art Museum of Chania – Olivepress presents a series of visual art exhibitions in its annual program of productions for 2018 with an anniversary character and a spirit of extroversion.

The aim is to present the contemporary art of the 21st century through the Greek and international collections of the Museum, as well as the presentation of the work of young artists in combination with the well-established work of contemporary art teachers, both within and outside Greece. With the collaboration of institutions and cultural bodies of culture, an intercultural dialogue is attempted through contemporary art.

Within the framework of the cultural actions series “2008-2018: 10 Years of the Contemporary Art Museum of Chania – Olivepress” and under the auspices of the Consulates of Greece and Cyprus in Saint Petersburg, a pictorial exhibition entitled DIE KUNST IST EIN AUSWEG BEI SEXUELLEN PROBLEMEN (translation: I techne einai mia diexodos apo ta sexualika provlimata / Art is a way out of sexual problems / Искусство – это выход из сексуальных проблем), co-curated by Ioannis N. Arhontakis, Dr Efi Kyprianidou and Dr Megakles Rogakos, will be inaugurated at Freud’s Dream Museum, Saint Petersburg, on Saturday, 25 August 2018, at 5 pm and will last until 5 October 2018.

The exhibition includes 41 artists from Greece, Cyprus and Russia: Eozen Agopian, Klitsa Antoniou, Lamprini Boviatsou, Konstantina Bolieraki, Ismini Bonatsou, Thodoros Brouskomatis, John Dialinos, Alexandros Dimitriadis, Lena Dimova, Yiannos Economou, Andrei Filippov, Antonis Frantzeskakis, Dimosthenis Gallis, Youla Hajigeorgiou, Marion Inglessi, Antigoni Kavvatha, Andreas Kontonis, George Koumouros, Nikos Kyritsis, Alexandros Maganiotis, Yannis P. Markantonakis, Georgia Matsamaki, Alkistis Michaelidou, Efsevia Mihailidou, Ioannis Monogyios, Konstantinos N. Patsios, Sylvia Petsoura, Aris Roupinas Andreas Savva, Rania Schoretsaniti, Petr Shevchenko, Chrysoula Skepetzi, Miranda Skylouraki, Barbara Spyrouli, Yannis Stefanakis, Aris Stoidis, Maro Theodorou, Katerina Tsebeli, Margarita Vassilakou, Chryssa Vathianaki and Alexandros Voutsas.

The collaboration with the Freud’s Dream Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russia, opens a channel of communication between two cultures with an old tradition, orthodox Christian affinity and perspectives of contemplating the contemporary world through art and science. The choice of presenting the contemporary art exhibition DIE KUNST IST EIN AUSWEG BEI SEXUELLEN PROBLEMEN, based on the legendary phrase of Sigmund Freud, brings art and psychoanalysis into an interactive embrace of creative exploration. The subjects of psychoanalysis and contemporary art occupy the artistic search of the Contemporary Art Museum of Chania – Olivepress for the umpteenth time. Already with the large group exhibition of the museum in 2013, entitled “When Cinderella met Dr Freud”, with the participation of 50 Greek and international artists, the exploration of the unconscious and the allegory governing psychoanalysis and art found a fertile field of exploratory development. The exhibition in Saint Petersburg aided by the Freud’s Dreams Museum looks like a natural consequence of a long-lasting engagement with the phenomena of the soul and the expressions of art.

41 contemporary artists were invited to visually capture their positions against Freud᾽s proverbial phrase with the ultimate goal not only of the osmosis between three European cultures but also of encounters of persons, positions, views and ideas at the crossroads of Saint Petersburg.

The Freud’s Dream Museum was founded in 1999 in Saint Petersburg, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the publication of Freud’s “The Interpretation of Dreams” (1899), while a Museum dedicated to Freud since 1971 has been operating in Vienna (Berggasse 19, Wien), with the corresponding Freud Museum operating since 1986 also in London (20 Maresfield Gardens, London), where the psychoanalyst spent the last years of his life when he escaped the Nazi annexation of Austria. Already there are contacts for direct collaboration with the above-mentioned Museums and presentation of the exhibition in Vienna and London. At the same time our intentions and actions converge in the presentation of the exhibition, after Saint Petersburg, in Athens, Cyprus, Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion, Crete, bringing the artistic contemplation of Freud’s words to contact with as great an audience as possible that is not complacent and craves our interdisciplinary dialogue.

The exhibition is presented by the Contemporary Art Museum of Chania – Olivepress and the Freud’s Dream Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and is co-organised by the Region of Crete, the Regional Unity of Chania and the Municipality of Platanias.
